Another Rilke Exploration

I love this image of Crestalban Farm’s old blacksmith shed.

Prompted by Rilke’s letter, in which he advised the young writer to look deeper, under the surface of Nature, I discovered what this image touched in me about my own life.

My first observation was that it embodied an essential truth – that it is nature’s way to take back to the earth all which has been laid upon her.

Then, my mind turned to what does it mean to be Over Grown? Superseded by the new?

Then the questions bubbled up:

Have I become useless to the young?

Did I make a difference with the time I had?

Is it possible to be beautiful with our cracks and crevasses?

Do the windows to my soul reveal who I am?

What do I reflect back to others?

Where am I worn and patched?

What kind of little lives have I sheltered?

Of what use am I now?

These questions may have arisen as I lean into my 75th birthday.

Any thoughts?

  2. Love the photo!! YES! Good thoughts and questions, lots to think about. Of course, you have marvelous talents and thoughts to share with younger generations. I hope you are doing so whether you think of it that way. Photography, knowledge of equines, recoding what you see in nature, knowledge of Colorado etc.. keeping a journal and other talents. Birthday is close !! have a great one !

  3. I love this way of using poetry and image to go deeper, explore, tickle the imagination.

This photo of the barn brings a smile. I see the windows as an opening, able to look in and look out. A peek into something more, something mysterious. It calls me in — both as an outsider looking in; and I can imagine, looking from the inside out, as a dreamer…

I love how it is framed by the green eyebrow.
