I have been reading Imani Parry’s new book, Black and Blues. I am once again reminded of the resilience of the human spirit. Many of us white Americans have not survived that level of trauma, but some have.

Each being is born with the will to grow. I believe it is a Divine Spark. Nature illustrates this imperative, from grasses sprouting through cracks in bricks to scrubby trees growing on cliff faces.

To bring it to a personal level, we have each survived some not so ideal environments right in our own families, yet here we are.

Looking back, we have made choices we are not proud of, yet we wove them into our story. Each of us has known the heartbreak of losing someone we loved. No one has had a pain free life. And yet, look who you have become!

What kept you going in a challenging time? Where, in you, does tenacity live? Where is that little chip of a star residing? Do you remember you are part of a larger Universe? We were each born with the will to survive and bring our gifts into the world.

Do not forget how important you are.
