The gold box

Each part of the country has its hazards. The East has floods, the Midwest has tornados, we have wildfires. Every barn with horses has to be prepared to evacuate their equines at a moment’s notice. Susie had a trailer for the big horses.

So, she purchased a stock trailer for the donks. The trailer was painted gold, probably to hide the rust! Everyone with hooves must be able to load quickly. Carol and I wanted to be sure the boys would load into the new gold box easily.

The boys must have heard us talking about teaching them to load. I noticed them whispering.

They hoofed it around the paddock like goofballs, laughing and joking about the humans who thought they could trick them into the box.

They continued to goof around, as boys will do. Anything to avoid the ‘thing’ in the paddock!

They tussle with each other, but no one really gets hurt. Such drama!

We decided to fool them by relaxing with them in the corral while eating our picnic lunch…………….

……….pretending we didn’t care if they hopped in the box on wheels or not.

Anyone who has been around donkeys knows they don’t respond to force. We knew enough to not even try. Only patience, kindness and food will entice them to voluntarily enter a scary space.

“Nope.” whispered Louie. “I think not,” whispered Styx.

Carol entered with the ‘bait.’

Then a bucket of grain. We heard Louie mumbling to Styx, “Hey, can yus believe her, she thinks we are gonna fall for dis trick!”

“I shall take a sniff. Perhaps this conveyance is safer than it appears.” Said Styx

“But I think not. I believe you should go first, Louie.”

“I’m in! Hey – ders food in heah”

“I believe I shall remain out here in the light and explore in safety.”

“It still smells rahther peculiar from this side.”

“Hey, I got in ya chicken! Ya betta think again or we will leave you behin when your fren, Carol starts to move dis box.”

They were still processing their encounter, so we left them alone in the paddock with the empty Gold Box. Luckily, there were no fires that summer.

To be continued
