Bear Poem – a tragedy
A warming planet
A summer of extraordinary heat
The drought continues
Trees and berry bushes produce limited nourishment
for the black bears
Mother bears are starving as winter approaches
They come down from the mountains in search of food
Many die, hit by cars
Humans are afraid as the bears scavenge through the trash
Many mothers are shot
Cubs are left behind as winter hibernation approaches
No mother, no food, no way to survive
Other than a human shelter
With food and safety, but out of their natural rhythm, until spring
